Creation Under Hypnosis
The inner depths of our mind are subconscious layers that act as a foundation for instinctual decision making, personal rationality; our subjective unconscious. The artist Matt Mullican explored this realm of what seems to be our unknown inner depths by creating drawings while under hypnosis. In this process he explores questions of knowledge, signification, language, and overall meaning making systems. His work expands beyond drawing to span video, collage, and installation to confront issues of perception and fascinating processes cognition. You can view his work at The Drawing Center (named by NYTimes as “one of the city’s most highly respected small art museums”) from November 21 2008-February 5 2009, located at 35 Wooster Street, New York, NY, 10013.
