WHY DOES ART WORK?

The article linked below explores the reasons we are attracted to art. Particularly, why our neuro receptors are triggered by the emphasis of features, like Picasso in his cubist painting of Gertrude Stein. For facial recognition, we have a part of the brain called the  fusiform gyrus, which responds more readily to caricatures, “..the abstractions are like a peak shift effect, turning the work of art…into a “super-stimulus””.

  1. Excellent interdisciplinary article–I can use this in my Humanities classes to defend modern art (which is occasionally necessary).
